The Luthier
Joel Sundkvist’s journey as a luthier began with a desire to understand his instrument on a deeper level. Over time, his interest evolved into a full-fledged craft, and since 2020, he has been creating classical nylon-string guitars in his workshop in Nolby, just outside Sundsvall, Sweden.

His instruments are made using traditional methods and carefully selected tonewoods that has been dried and aged for severeal years. His production is exclusive, with only a few guitars built each year. Each instrument reflects his attention to detail and his pursuit of the perfect balance between tone, response, and playability.

The Guitars
Tonewoods
For the soundboard, Joel primarily uses European or Engelmann Spruce or Western Red Cedar. For the back and sides classic tonewoods such as Indian rosewood, flamed maple or Cypress are primarily used. More unique choices like Madagascar rosewood, walnut, Padauk, flamed birch are also available . The necks are made from mahogany or Spanish cedar, and the fingerboards are made of ebony or rosewood. All of Joels tonewood comes from sustainable dealers and sources.
Finish
The guitars are finished with Shellac applied with the French polish technique — a traditional method that creates a thin, beautiful and protective layer, allowing the wood to vibrate freely. Alternatively, the back and sides can be treated with a matte oil finish, offering a slightly more durable yet natural-looking result.
